My Favourite Illusion is the project of songwriter/producer Phil McPhee, who also moonlights on the bass for Spiral Kites and Housework.

I had a chat with him this week about his new album The Breathing Room.

You have to respect a band that knows exactly what their brand is and sticks to it.

If you've seen a bunch of guys looking distinctly Beatlesque and out of place around town recently, chances are it was The Breed filming their new clip for 'The City'.

The Breed play 60s style music in an 80s power pop/post punk style and suggest you "Think Ramones with musicianship, better manners than the Sex Pistols and less political than The Clash, yet sounding like none of these bands". I can hear you thinking about that from here.

Those who know me will roll their eyes knowingly when I say it's no secret that I've had a bit of a lady boner for Mess O Reds for some time now.

So it's no real surprise that (drummer for Mess O Reds) Zac's new band, Venuslight Overdrive, is also getting my leg twitching. Perhaps he simply knows how to surround himself with good musical collaborators.

Get on board this. It's music to drive to, it's music to get lost in. It's music you should be listening to.

Formerly known as My Girlfriend's Sister, Chase City have built themselves a solid reputation in a very short period of time with their indie pop flavoured music.

Their brand new single released this week called 'Colours' makes me think of summery days full of festivals and cider. Fun.

Considering their bio says "Chase City not only plays everything that speaks summer, partying and good times but has the energy to back it up" - it's likely to be the first time i've actually believed a band bio to be true. Oh the shock of it.

Partie Traumatic is an electro-dance dubstep act by Hobart producer Mathew Hislop.

A prolific producer, Hislop has released both his debut album, Galaxies, as well as an EP, Visions, in the last 12 months.

'Hallows Eve' is the brand new single from his next EP, Revelation, due for release in November.

Can Tasmanian indie outfit Enola Fall overcome the nigh-on-insurmountable tyranny of distance to record their latest EP? 

Good question. Do you have $10,000?

Following in the kickstarting, crowdfunding, Pozible, I'm-throwing-my-money-at-worthwhile-projects trend, Enola Fall are trying to secure $10,000 to record their next EP with Lachlan Mitchell, the producer behind the Jezabel's successful releases.

The pledge rewards range from an unreleased "E-Sides" EP, to hand printed tees, to personalised songs, to private gigs and intimate dinners cooked by the band themselves, and their pitch video gave me a pretty good giggle when it was launched yesterday.

Have a listen to one of the tracks from the E-Sides EP, 'Hospital', watch the pitch video, then head to their Kickstart page and be a part of something good. 

Besides, if you don't dig deep and help them reach the $10,000 target, my desire to have my own song written for me won't come true.

And quite frankly, there's no-one I'd rather write me a song than Enola Fall.

In the same way that I still like to call The Nation Blue, The Dacios and Ivy St. 'Tasmanian' because they originated on home soil, I still call Jay Fraser Tasmanian even though he "Left Australia to learn how to play. Stayed in London to learn how to survive".

Don't hold it against me - he says he's coming home next year.

Radio Silence has hit record and are finally ready to release their debut single "Firefly', from their forthcoming EP. 

Fronted by the relentless Ian Murtagh (you might remember him from Billy Goats Gruff), the guys have produced a song that'll pop up in your head on repeat when you least suspect it.

King Carousel has finished recording their second album and as a taster, have released this track ‘Happy Psychopathic Dream’.

This track is so wonderfully, wonderfully dreamy and if it’s any indication of what the new album will be like, I can’t wait.

If anyone’s doing it right, it’s Hobart’s Christopher Coleman Collective.

They’ve just returned from a string of shows in Tasmania, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide, where they took out third place in the National Campus Band Competition against 256 other bands.

Upon their return they were greeted by the news that local rag The Mercury will be fostering them in a bid to get them a spot at this year’s Falls Music & Arts Festival at Marion Bay (you can vote here).
